Appearance and properties: Dark green or grayish black needle-like crystals, hygroscopic.

Or dark green solid. Its solution or vapor is dark red. Hygroscopic. It reacts violently upon contact with water.

Solubility: Readily soluble in water, soluble in acids.

Solubility: Soluble in anhydrous ether, anhydrous ethanol, dry alcohols, dry ethers, concentrated inorganic acids, organic solvents and chlorinated solvents. The heat of melting is 19.00 kJ/rnol.

Sensitivity: Moisture sensitive

Stability: Stable, but sensitive to moisture and air. Contact with water releases toxic gases. It is incompatible with water and strong oxidants.

It is an active and relatively volatile crystal, and a high-purity and refractory metal halide. It undergoes chemical reactions in both gaseous and liquid states, volatilizes at medium temperatures, and easily decomposes into metallic molybdenum deposits in gaseous state. It is readily soluble in organic solvents.

- Used as a catalyst for chlorination
