It is one of the simplest aromatic alcohols and can be regarded as phenyl substituted methanol. In nature, most essential oils are present in the form of esters, such as jasmine oil, hyacinth oil and Peru balsam all contain this ingredient.
Chemical properties
After oxidation or dehydrogenation, benzaldehyde is generated. Hydrogenation can generate toluene, bibenzyl or methylcyclohexane, cyclohexyl methanol. The esterification reaction with carboxylic acid generates the corresponding ester. In the presence of zinc chloride, boron trifluoride, anhydrous boric acid or phosphoric acid and sulfuric acid, it is condensed into a resinous substance.

Application
Benzyl alcohol is used as a general solvent for inks, paints, lacquers, and epoxy resin coatings. Thus it can be used in paint strippers especially when combined with compatible viscosity enhancers to encourage the mixture to cling to painted surfaces.It is also a precursor to a variety of esters, used in the soap, perfume, and flavor industries. It is also used as a photographic developer.
