Basic Overview of Oilfield Drilling Grade Xanthan Gum (XC Polymer)
CAS No.:11138-66-2
Xanthan gum is a water-soluble anionic biopolymer produced through the biological fermentation of Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris, commonly abbreviated as XC polymer in the oil and gas industry. The specialized type for oilfield drilling is refined and purified to achieve low impurity levels and stable rheological properties, serving as a mainstream rheological modifier in water-based drilling fluid systems. It appears as a free-flowing fine powder ranging from milky white to light beige, which dissolves rapidly in both cold and hot water.
Key Product Features
- Excellent shear thinning (pseudoplastic)
In the static state, it exhibits high viscosity, effectively suspending barite and drill cuttings; during pumping circulation, the viscosity decreases, resulting in low flow resistance and reduced pumping energy consumption.
- Strong resistance to salt and high-valent ions
It exhibits stable performance in freshwater, seawater, and saturated brine drilling fluid systems, with resistance to calcium and magnesium ion interference.
- Good compatibility performance
It can be used in combination with various drilling fluid additives such as CMC, PAC, anti-collapse agents, defoamers, and filtrate reducers.
- It has a wide applicable pH range and a stable system pH range of 3.0 to 12.0.

Main application scenarios in oilfields
As a thickening rheological agent for water-based drilling fluids:- Suspension of drill cuttings and transport of rock fragments, ensuring uniform suspension of solids in the well to prevent sand sticking and bit balling;
- Adjust the rheology of drilling fluid to optimize sand-carrying and sand-cleaning capabilities of the mud;
- Used for shallow land wells, offshore saltwater drilling fluids, workover fluids, and seawater-based completion fluid systems.
