Copper(II) chloride dihydrate (CAS 10125-13-0), with the chemical formula CuCl₂·2H₂O and a relative molecular mass of 170.5, is a blue-green orthorhombic crystal. It readily deliquesces in humid environments but easily effloresces in dry conditions. Additionally, it is soluble in water, alcohol, ammonia, and acetone, with moderate solubility in ether and ethyl acetate, making it a common catalyst for organic reactions, particularly in carbon-hydrogen activation processes. Its aqueous solution exhibits slight acidity. When heated to 100°C, it loses two water molecules of crystallization, but it is noteworthy that it tends to hydrolyze at high temperatures, making the production of anhydrous salt difficult. During the crystallization process from copper(II) chloride aqueous solution, the crystal form varies with temperature: the dihydrate is obtained between 26–42°C, the tetrahydrate below 15°C, while the trihydrate and monohydrate are formed at 15–25.7°C and above 42°C, respectively. Moreover, copper(II) chloride dihydrate has relatively low toxicity.

Application
Copper chloride dihydrate plays a critical role in multiple fields. It is commonly used as a catalyst in chemical reactions, such as the halogenation of hydrocarbons and the oxidation of organic compounds. Additionally, it serves as a food additive in the food industry. In the dyeing and printing sector, copper chloride dihydrate functions as a mordant, dye colorant, and wood preservative. In the petroleum industry, it is employed in processes like deodorization, desulfurization, and purification. Beyond these applications, it acts as a water purification disinfectant, an insecticide in pesticide production, and a key raw material in the manufacturing of glass, ceramics, pigments, oxidizers, and metal refining. Furthermore, copper chloride dihydrate is frequently utilized as an analytical reagent to support scientific research.
